Youth Action’s service year has commenced! Youth Action’s Junior Youth Action and Inspiring Leaders programs are well off to the races. And now YA’s Service Leader Corp program (General Body membership) has also jump started its service as well!
General Body Members of Youth Action are our Service Fellows who use the training they received from either JYA and ILP to participate in and organize service projects throughout Philadelphia. This year Youth Action will participate in 5 volunteer projects and organize 2-3 service projects of our own. Volunteer Projects are generally places we go to support the efforts of partnered organizations (I.E. Ronald McDonald House, a soup kitchen) and service projects are generally projects we develop and organize for the community that is sponsored by us (I.E. Toy Drive & Festival). In addition to service planning at monthly meetings, our member meetings will occasionally have guest speakers to empower members personally and professionally.
After the first two Service Leader Corp meetings, team members have agreed to focus the 2015-2016 service year theme on the following: Cultural Awareness (CA). Each of member pointed out a need for those in the Philadelphia community to become more aware of each other’s cultural values, beliefs, and perceptions. Hence, members are interested in individuals developing sensitivity and understanding of another ethnic group. And this usually involves internal changes in terms of attitudes and values on how individuals understand each other. Members of Youth Action not only want to make themselves aware of the importance of being culturally aware, but also discover ways to excite young Philadelphians about the importance of cultural awareness.
Together Youth Action members will develop 4-5 volunteer & service projects around this service theme. This year’s service project will tie in members’ interest in sports, tutoring & literacy, and stereotypes.
