MLK Day of Service:A Day On, Not a Day Off

On January 20, 2014, Youth Action will take part in the celebration of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King was not only an activist but he was an American leader during the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Through nonviolent activism, he successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. Soon after his assassination in 1968, a campaign flourished to have a federal holiday in Dr. King’s honor. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983. It took approximately 17 years for the holiday to be officially observed in all 50 states.

Today, Americans from all walks of life come together on this eventful day to make an impact on their communities. Youth Action is no different.

Our members will spend the day at the African American Museum in Philadelphia from 11am – 5pm, located on 701 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19106. The museum is having an event titled ‘Martin Luther King: Sharing the Heritage Celebration and Day of Service.’ Guests are allowed to donate food throughout the day which would be given to the ChAAMPs Against Hunger Philabundance Food Drive. Visitors will also engage in hands-on service projects, explore exhibits, and watch great performances.

Admission to the African American Museum is free so come join Youth Action as we fight to continue Dr. King’s legacy.
