Youth Action is proud to announce the launch of an unique youth-led one-year College Readiness Program. which will solicit a cohort of high school juniors to participate in a seven two hour session weekend program that will engage them on how a college education can shape their future. The program intends to review the college application process with the students and offer one-on-one college mentoring, assistance with college essays, a resume workshop, college interview training, financial aid seminar, and a college tour free of cost. Those in the program will also be exposed to service by participating in Youth Action’s volunteer program. Participants who successfully complete the program will be eligible to receive a scholarship from Youth Action.
The College Readiness Program will provide seven two-hour workshop sessions for a total of 14 hours of workshop content for each student involved in the program. Each month’s training topics were selected by surveying high school students as well as by obtaining input from college students. The program will be led by high achieving college students who understand the significance of a college education. By having college students mentor high school students on college success, participants will be able to make strong connections with individuals relatively close to their age that can also support their hopes and ambitions. In addition to their college mentors, each program participant will be paired up with a high school senior Youth Action member who will serve as their Peer Counselor. Peer Counselors will be responsible for keeping up with program participants’ progress and understanding of the college admission process and also be available for peer support. They will be there to share their stories on the college application process and tips on how they completed/are completing their own college applications.
School administrators, faculty, mentors, and parents may nominate students for the program. We are asking that the participation form be submitted by Wednesday, March 28th, 2012. Fill out the following participation form: College Readiness Program Participation Form.
