Brittany Botts Receives Bonner Scholarship

Brittany, a senior at the Abington Friends School, has been awarded Spelman College’s competitive Bonner Scholarship for Community Service. According to Spelman’s website “The Bonner Scholars Program provides a service-learning scholarship for students who have high financial need and a commitment to service. The program is designed to heighten the overall education a Scholar receives by engaging students in ongoing service work and helping them develop the tools and the knowledge necessary to make their experience meaningful and lasting.” The scholarship will significantly help Brittany with tuition and expenses at Spelman.

Brittany’s outreach in the community has been incredible. She has been involved with numerous service activities including those with A Better Chance, Peace and Love, and she once served as the Co-Director of Junior Youth Action. Her love for service and dedication to others makes her an ideal recipient for this award.

Following her high school graduation, Brittany plans to study sociology and anthropology at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. Brittany is confident that Spelman’s educational model in training women to become leaders in their communities, will provide her with an academically rich and nurturing environment that will mold her into a prudent community activist.

Brittany’s major selection has everything to do with her drive to remain involved with community work throughout her lifetime.  “I am very passionate about helping people and giving back to my community. These two disciplines will allow me to intensely study ways to improve the quality of life of those in my community.”

She eventually plans to attend graduate school at Columbia University in New York and receive a degree in political science. Thereafter, she plans to lead a life committed to humanitarian interests and continue work with grassroots non-profits organizations and foundations that seek to develop low-income communities of color.
