Co-Sponsors 15th Annual Youth Summit
Philadelphia, PA (October 30, 2007) On
Saturday, October 27, 2007 Youth Action team members
volunteered at the Philadelphia Sports Extravaganza and
Wellness Expo held at the Wachovia Spectrum. The annual
event is geared toward eliminating childhood obesity.
The event coincides with Youth Action's current two-year
service project to raise awareness about important
public health issues. The two-year project concentrates
on public issues that disproportionately affect
communities of color with an emphasis on Sickle Cell
Disease, Drug and Alcohol, HIV/AIDS, and Nutrition.

Ray of Hope Ministries, Inc., The Mt. Airy Church of
God In Christ, and Councilwoman Marian B. Tasco will
host the 15th Annual Philadelphia Youth Summit:
"Each One-Reach One-To Teach One". The summit will
take place at Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ,
located at 6401 Ogontz Avenue, from 8:30 AM to 5:00
PM on Saturday, April 26, 2008.

Youth Action' Its 2nd Annual Toy Drive
Philadelphia, PA Youth Action will host its 2nd Annual
Toy Drive on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 from 6pm-10pm
at Platinum Grille Restaurant, n19 Crittenden Street,
Philadelphia, PA 19118. This charitable event is being
held to bring the holiday cheer and the feeling of home
to the children who benefit from the outreach services
of Southern Home Services, a Philadelphia-based program
that provides free food, clothing, furniture and housing
assistance to those in need.

On

Youth Action
Creates Mentorship Program for Philadelphia Youth
Youth Action is expanding its current membership
base to include youth ages 8-13, in an efforts
to develop social consciousness on important issues
to a newer, younger, and very important demographic.
The new program, pegged as a “Junior Youth Action,”
is an effort on behalf of the senior members to act
as mentors to area youth and instill the strong values
of civic participation, justice and equality.
Saturday, September 22, 2007 will be the formal
launch of the program, when Junior Youth Action has
its first meeting at Finley Recreation Center, 7701
Mansfield Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.

Begins “Speaking to the Mind and Body” Campaign; A
Two Yearlong Service Project About Our Health
Youth Action begins a two year-long service project
about public health. The campaign will bring
awareness to important and prevalent health concerns
in the Philadelphia Areas. Topics will include:
Sickle Cell Anemia, Drugs and Alcohol, HIV/AIDS and
STDs, and Nutrition. Youth Action believes by
bringing these important issues to the minds of
Philadelphians, it will lead to more people putting
their health first.

Smiley Alumni Conclude Yearlong Service Project
Raising Social Consciousness on the Problem of
Homelessness
Youth Action has finished its yearlong service
project to raise social consciousness about
homelessness. The project which began a year ago,
sought to change the way youth and other city
residents interacted with the homeless from a toxic
interaction to that of a respectful relationship.

Address at Youth Action Gala
State Representative Tony J. Payton, Jr. will give
the keynote address at Youth Action’s 1st annual
gala “Standing for Change; Laying the Groundwork for
a Culture of Understanding and Brotherhood.” The
black tie event will take place on Saturday, August
4, 2007 at 6 PM at the First District Plaza
ballroom, 3801 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA and
will feature musical entertainment by Brass Heaven.

Pennsylvania Primary
Youth Action collaborated with the Committee of
Seventy on May 15, the Pennsylvania Primary Day.
Members spent the day across the city serving as
official poll watchers providing assistance to
voters and reporting any voting irregularities.

Youth Action has collaborated with athletes from the
School District of Philadelphia and Clear Channel
Broadcasting, Inc. (Power 99 FM) to host its 2nd
Annual Basketball Game to raise public awareness
about the problem of homelessness.

Registers Over 1,200 New Voters
Youth Action has completed its first voter
registration campaign registering over 1,200 new
voters. The campaign was focused on mobilizing young
adults (ages 18-29), low-income, and homeless
residents of the city of Philadelphia.

Members Set Goal to Register 5,000 Voters
Youth Action has launched a Philadelphia-wide voter
registration and mobilization campaign in
preparation for the 2007 mayoral election. With less
than nine weeks until Election Day, Youth Action is
working hard to register and mobilize 5,000 people
to vote. The campaign is being held to energize a
new movement of young adults between the ages of 18
and 29 to vote, by challenging them, especially
first-time voters, to find their reason to vote.
Youth Action will be setting up registration tables
at local high schools, college campuses and area
malls in an effort to reach its goal of registering
5,000 people to vote.

Action’s Holiday Toy Drive Is A Success
Youth Action held its first annual holiday toy drive
on December 20, 2006, at the Ogontz Grill. The gifts
donated benefited the residents of the Eliza Shirley
House, an emergency shelter facility. Youth Action’s
sense of compassion towards others influenced other
members of the community to help the less fortunate
during the holiday season.

Continues Its Effort To Help The Homeless
Youth Action continues their one-year service
project to raise social consciousness about
homelessness through direct action and advocacy. The
weeks prior to Election Day, Youth Action members
registered over 150 homeless people to vote and help
transport them to the polls. The Youth Action
members were actively involved in allowing members
of society who are traditionally ignored exercise
their fundamental rights. Youth Action continues its
spirit of compassion towards others with a holiday
toy drive to help homeless families.

Action members began volunteering around the city at
different homeless shelters in a yearlong effort to
raise social consciousness about homelessness. Youth
Action members worked at Chosen 300, St. Columba,
and Kairos House.

Athletes and Power 99 FM to Host Basketball Game to
Bring Awareness About Domestic Violence
Youth Action has collaborated with top athletes from
the School District of Philadelphia and Clear
Channel Broadcasting, Inc. (Power 99 FM) to host a
basketball game raising public awareness about the
problems teens are facing with domestic and dating
violence. This event will take place on Saturday,
May 27, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Central High School, 1700
W. Olney Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19141 and Power 99
FM will be broadcasting from the event.
